Aluminum Horse Trailers fill the void left by
Brenderup for fuel saving trailers:
Why not build a trailer to be
aerodynamic, lowering wind resistance to improve fuel mileage and
using the air to stabilize the trailer. It should be a priority with
trailer manufactures now and if not now
when, when fuel is $10
a gallon? It's about function not just
beauty. It's time to change the way horse trailers are
designed. And handling should be a design function. Safr Trailers tows similar to Brenderup's
design with no sway.

Brenderup, the
"Remarkable" Horse Trailer,
US assembly and distribution ended January 2011
"The easiest towing
trailer I've used and that means better fuel economy." MrTruck.com

I give truck, SUV and
trailer advice on my websites and the magazines my columns are in. So
I'm careful about what I recommend. I was curious about Brenderup's,
hearing about them in horse forums and seeing them at horse expo's. I
called for the video, was impressed and then used one for a week and let
other folks load and haul horses in them. My full review is linked
below. Brenderup makes one and two horse conventional tow trailers.
(tag-a-longs, bumper pulls) Even the largest one horse trailer comes
from Brenderup. With and without dressing rooms.

The
more I learn about Brenderup, the more I get excited! How would
you like a horse trailer that you can't feel behind you, cool
and light inside, has no need for a trailer brake controller, no
need for a safety break-away switch or the useless battery, no
need for a weight distributing hitch and has a parking brake. I
call it
"remarkable." No it's not a
new company from Oklahoma or China. They have been assembled in
Texas going on 25 years, so they are not new, just undiscovered.
Brenderup is the one of the most popular trailers in Europe
starting back in 1954. This makes Brenderup as experienced as
the oldest horse trailer companies started in the USA. Bet you
didn't know that. I didn't. And they have a US Patent on the
Baron Series. They do look different, but form follows function.
And Brenderup is all about it's function. |
The
design of the roof and sides, make Brenderup aerodynamic. No not
just a narrow nose, but as a wing, the shape directs the air
for easy towing. Everything about the Brenderup is designed for
easy towing. The rear of the trailer slopes in to break up the
vacuum behind the trailer. The tailgate door is adjustable for
air flow so pressure and dust doesn't twirl around in the
trailer. Even the axles have camber and caster like your cars
front axle, to realign the trailer towing straight. The longer
tongue, smaller tires, containment of the horse, give the
Brenderup a balanced low center of gravity. |
Your not going to believe
the tongue weight. I have more tongue weight after a Vegas buffet. In
Europe they have large horses and small tow vehicles and expensive fuel,
so horse trailers have to accomplish special tasks. One of them is low
tongue weight. In Europe tongue weight can't exceed 3.75% of the trailer
weight. Yeah almost nothing. In the US we are use to 10-15%. Some of the
heavier tongue weights for conventional trailers, has to do with
position of the horse in a trailer. Brenderup designed their trailers to
control the horses position with a 3 adjustment up and down chest bar
and 3 position butt bar to match the length of your horses.
All
this explains why a Brenderup can be towed with a "smaller than
you're used to" vehicle. Since the most popular towing vehicle
in Europe is a Volvo station wagon, imagine what you could do
with a mid size SUV or 1/2 ton truck. A trailer that doesn't
have a sway problem or a weight distribution problem for the tow
vehicle, how unique. I've blamed tow vehicles often for how a
trailer tows, but AB (After Brenderup) I'm re-thinking my
position for towing problems. What we are use to, is more tongue
weight needing more wheelbase of the tow vehicle to control it.
My enthusiasm may seem hard to believe, I don't jump up and down
for just anybody. Test drive a Brenderup and challenge my view.

The Proof is in the Pulling!

All Brenderup horse trailer models have
super head room for the horse. Letting the horse find balance
and clear those sinuses. The windows are not beyond the horses
line of vision, preventing nervous distraction from windows
placed behind the horses head.
All Brenderup's have a 5' spring
loaded solid tailgate ramp. 5' gives you a slight slope into the
trailer and is long enough for all 4 of your horses feet to be
on the ramp at the same time. This makes the horse happy, the
ramps are solid and have 7 cheats. There are no gaps between the
ramp and the trailer floor. Brenderup's even have tailgate jacks
on each side for a solid ramp feel. You may only need these to
train a horse that's' never loaded ramps. In my review we didn't
even use them with inexperienced horses. |
The construction is first
rate. Torsion axles with shocks, so the suspension works more than the
tires, instead of the other way around as with most trailers. Brenderup
trailers ride well empty as well as loaded. In other words the horse is
not part of the trailer suspension. The suspension is over built, with
larger maintenance free wheel bearings, galvanized frame, axles and
inside bottom panels. The windows are framed in steel and all the hinges
are stainless steel. One piece laminated floor, one piece fiberglass
roof, one piece SPC solid phenolic resin walls that are indestructible
and they flex enough not to bruise your horses flank. Get the picture,
it's not built from leftovers like RV trailers. The roof of Brenderup
are fiberglass and reinforced fiberglass ribs for strength and no metal
for a rearing horse to bang into.
The inertia brake system
doesn't need a trailer brake controller. That saves you some money and
hassle. These are the standard brake system in Europe. The brakes are
activated by a surge type coupler, but instead of using hydraulics like
a boat trailer, the coupler pulls a rod attached to all 4 wheels by
cable. This is speed and load sensitive. The brake drums and bearings
are maintenance free. Twin leading shoes in each drum, are
bi-directional, when you back up there is a 3% drag factor. The
parking brake will turn the brake cam over center and lock the wheels
from turning in either direction. Having a parking brake is great. Oh
yeah, there are none of those pesky brake magnates in the wheels. All
the things I hate inside the brake drums are gone. Great braking, it all
seems to simple, but it works. No brake magnates, no break away battery,
no trailer brake controller, no sway, nobody else does all that.
Smaller wheels, torsion
axles with shocks, long tongue reaching to the front axle, all lead to a
lower center of gravity. Low load height, and a solid ramp all add up to
easy loading horses. Brenderup
comes in several models, to fit all horse sizes and pregnant mares, even
dressing rooms that grow. I enjoy towing trailers, I've towed over
1,000,000 miles back on the farm doing it for a living. It's just flat
out fun towing a Brenderup, I want them to make RV's so I can live in
one on while on the road test driving trucks

Brenderup Baron, Bigger,
more room and still will save you gas. These days we all want better fuel
mileage towing our trailers. Even if fuel prices go down, we know
they'll go back up. Brenderup is the easiest towing horse trailer I've
found. Designed to be towed with cars in Europe safely. Brenderup is a
remarkable horse trailer, with the chassis coming from Denmark and the
walls and roof made in Texas.
